It is crafted with care and respect for it's readers. Like other middle stories, so much is unresolved at the end that we are loathe to close the back cover. Some of the stretching comes from having to learn to forgive and trust characters who have proven dangerous in the past but seem to be giving us good reasons to see them in a new light. Some of it comes from having to dig deep with in. Some of the stretching comes from acute loss. Like "Two Towers" or "The Empire Strikes Back", "Ember Falls" challenges us by stretching the characters we have come to love. A classic middle book, our family has cried and rejoiced throughout, both of the times that we have read it. Longer, darker, more challenging, and also more rewarding than the original. Behind the exciting action is a strong moral heart of service to a greater ideal which this reader personally finds refreshing in a world increasingly lacking in firm belief standards.Įmber Falls is the "Empire Strikes Back" of the Rabbits With Swords books. Yes, there is violence, but it is not gratuitous or gory. I believe children beginning from age ten to twelve will especially appreciate the spectacle. #THE GREEN EMBER SERIES 2 CODE#Anyone who likes the idea of sword wielding rabbits grounded in a code of honour and sacrifice against terrible raptor slave lords will enjoy the series. And who knows? Perhaps in the third book we will find this character did not really die after all.Īnyone who enjoys fantasy will like this series. Without revealing too much, I admit I was disappointed by a certain turn of events (death of a character) but will admit this propelled the narrative to a well constructed conclusion. All comes to resolution in a climactic battle with morbins army and a cliffhanger ending. Their dedication to the cause at times conflicts with personal struggles and meets confusion in the form of a surprise newcomer, potentially their best ally or worst enemy. Heather and Picket both must bear greater responsibility and face graver trials as the grim denouement looms close. ☺Įmber Falls chronicles the continued arc of the cause of the Mended Wood. There are quite a few plot twists and revelations as well, which made the story irresistible to put down (for me, at least). Each chapter is skilfully written, the wording concise and powerful, especially befitting the action scenes. The sequel does everything a good sequel ought: it extends the action and plot, deepens the characters of the first while weaving in the strands for the final culmination. Wow, I must say the author has delivered marvellously in this second of a trilogy. It’s a self-contained one but not a completed one. “Ember Falls” is the second of at least three in the rabbit series. An additional story is being developed as well – the plight of a girl rabbit enslaved by the wolves and forced to serve them. #THE GREEN EMBER SERIES 2 FULL#It’s action-packed, full of near misses and near hits, acts of courage in the face of overwhelming odds, and riveting scenes of anguish and confrontation. It’s a delightful story, and it can be read aloud to a children’s audience (or an adult one, for that matter). Heather and Picket have much to learn, and much to be wary about. Trouble lurks at every corner – wolves attacking in unexpected forays into the rabbit compound of Halfwind, eagles screaming and pouncing, the arrival of a new and suspect rabbit army, and traitors lurking in their midst. He’s in training because the rabbits know war is coming. Picket is training with the elite military unit called the Fowlers, while mourning the taking of his parents and little brother by the wolves. Emma, who will turn out to be something more than a doctor. Heather is learning the arts of medicine from Dr. And what rabbits can do is rather amazing.įollowing the great victory over the wolves at Jupiter’s Crossing (where we left our rabbit friends in “The Green Ember”), brother and sister Picket and Heather Longtreader have settled into a kind of normal daily living. Smith and illustrated by Zach Franzen (there’s also a prequel – “The Black Star of Kingston”). “Ember Falls” is the second installment of “The Green Ember” series by S.D. But I am enjoying one, and I’m not laughing – I’m smiling. If you’d told me I would be enjoying a children’s book series about rabbits, I might have laughed out loud.
